Joel Bryan Tobeck nasceu em 02 de Junho de 1971 em Auckland, Nova Zelândia. Sua mãe era a atriz Liddy Holloway, uma celebre atriz neo-zelandesa. Teve inúmeros trabalhos no teatro junto com sua mãe. Com 5 anos, estrelou a muito aplaudida peça "Dutchess de Malfi”.
